Coca-Cola Unveils First Look At Its Sustainable Paper Bottle Packaging Redesign

Coca-Cola has pledged to boost sustainability by promising to reduce its carbon footprint. The company’s early efforts can now be seen in the prototype of its first paper bottle.
Previously, Coca-Cola launched its World Without Waste commitment, where the company aimed to collect a bottle or can for every single beverage sold. Though 100-percent recyclable materials were used, the brand wasn’t in direct control of whether consumers would participate in its greener efforts. So, it has now ventured into paper packaging.
Coca-Cola Europe has now developed the first paper packaging design in collaboration with Paboco, which is also working on paper bottles with Absolut.
The current concept is wrapped with a paper shell and includes a plastic liner and closure. However, the company hopes to find a solution to ensure the product will be “recycled like any paper.”
“A paper bottle opens up a whole new world of packaging possibilities, and we are convinced that paper packaging has a role to play in the future,” Stijn Franssen, the brand’s EMEA R&D packaging innovation manager, said in a press release.
“The next step is to find a solution to create a bottle without the plastic liner,” Franssen added.
