MTA Unveils First Major Subway Map Redesign In 40 Years, Now Moves In Real-Time

The iconic New York subway map has received its first massive redesign in 40 years.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has released a new digital Live Subway Map, which blends design elements from the classic printed map and The Weekender online map. The project is a partnership between the MTA, the Transit Innovation Partnership and Brooklyn-based design firm Work & Co.
The new map lets riders easily plan trips and watch train movements as they happen.
Work & Co designed and developed the digital tool with the goal of making the lives of New Yorkers easier. The map allows riders to navigate the system in an intuitive and digital way, and they will no longer have to read through printed station signage to determine how they should travel.
The map is currently in its beta phase, and riders are encouraged riders to check it out and provide feedback for possible improvements.
“Every rider has had the experience where we get on a train one weekend, look up from our phones and see a place we didn't expect to see,” said New York City Transit's chief customer officer Sarah Meyer said in a statement. “When New Yorkers use this map, that will no longer happen. The map that Work & Co has generously donated to the people of New York—will make their lives easier.”
The map continuously updates itself to show subway service statuses presently, at night, and over the weekend. It also displays train arrival times, elevator and escalator status at every station, train reroutes, exit and entrance locations, and tunnel transfers. Users can click on individual stations or on train lines to find specific updates.
Explore the live subway map here. The map can be added to iPhone and Android phones’ home screens, where it will act like a standalone app.
