This Futuristic Farm Plans To Grow & Serve ‘Slaughter-Free’ Steaks In Space

In time, the expression, “The cow jumped over the moon,” may not seem too preposterous. Israeli food-tech startup Aleph Farms intends to harvest meat in a space farm and even serve it to humans on Mars or the moon.

The endeavor is part of the company’s Aleph Zero space program, which will force the company to look for ways to produce fresh quality meat in “harsh and remote” extraterrestrial settings. This way, it can one day be able to cultivate food anywhere on Earth, allowing regions with non-ideal conditions to gain access to sources of nutrition too.

The plan comes after Aleph Farms successfully developed a mini beef steak with a 3D bioprinter aboard the ISS in 2019. The meat was also “slaughter-free” and produced “without harming animals,” as it was created out of a small piece of muscle tissue put together from cow cells.

In a recent announcement, the company shared a concept design of a ‘BioFarm’ in space (shown above) dedicated to serving meat in “extraterrestrial human colonies.” The plan is in line with Aleph Farms’ vision to provide “unconditional access to high-quality nutrition to anyone, anytime, anywhere.”

By adapting to the cold and thin climate of deep-space exploration, the ability to produce food in remote earthboard regions like the Sahara Desert or Antarctica shouldn’t be too much to ask.

Certainly, space-grown steak will be a welcome option for astronauts, who have been relying on freeze-dried and preserved foods for sustenance.

In possibly related news, NASA has just discovered a lot more water on the moon than it originally thought there was. Perhaps you’d fancy a glass of sparkling lunar water to go with your romantic space beef steak dinner?

In December 2018, we achieved an important milestone towards achieving our vision: leaving a better legacy for future generations by establishing a new standard for the way we experience and produce meat. @wsj/@jasonbellini was the first to reveal our prototype of the world's first cultivated steak - a whole-muscle meat grown without slaughtering an animal.

By looking up to nature as a measure, mentor and model from which we can learn, we’re able to grow directly from cells the same steaks which taste, smell and feel like the meat we all love! 🥩🔜🍽
