Norway’s New Passport Design Reveals Mountains Coming To Life Under UV Light

Creative agency Neue has unveiled its vibrant reinvention of the Norwegian passport, which has been six years in the making.
The Oslo-based agency won a competition to redesign Norway’s passport back in 2014, which required the new look to clearly express the Norwegian identity and propel the passport as a design object while staying true to traditional values. Neue explored the country’s sweeping landscapes and incorporated them into the new design.
The passport’s pages are full of illustrations of landforms from all over the Nordic nation, each carefully created from a combination of dots and lines. The passport depicts mountains, forests, rivers, and the famous Northern Lights—all drawn by the agency’s in-house teams. These symbolic images are colored in pale shades of blue, and paired with fine lines and different textures to define objects like the sky and mountains.
When you place the passport under UV light, the scenery comes to life, as if jumping out of the page. “Images of scenery and landscapes can easily become clichés, but by being widely accepted and deeply rooted in Norwegian culture, they are also very easy to identify with,” Neue’s creative director Lars Håvard Dahlstrøm explained.
Norway’s scenery has supplied the nation with rich fisheries, clean hydroelectric power, and endless recreation, and these elements are therefore symbolic of the country.
“The landscapes surrounding us give a sense of belonging and pride, and fill a symbolic function for the entire nation,” Dahlstrøm added.
The passport now also has more advanced security features and comes in an array of vibrant colors—white, red and blue. Take a look at the new design below.
