Lufthansa Transforms Economy Seats Into Beds To Make Flying More Comfortable

When travel becomes more easily available, airlines will have higher standards to live up to as flyers are now more astute at getting completely comfortable at home. That’s where Lufthansa’s new sofa-style seats might come into the picture.
According to travel blog The Points Guy, the German airline is trialing a new ‘Sleeper’s Row’ concept which converts a full row of three to four adjacent seats into a “bed,” similar to what Air New Zealand has already done with its ‘Skycouch’.
The new format offers more legroom and allows passengers to rest comfortably, like at home, for a good night’s sleep. Of course, this might also be useful in the COVID-19 era, when social distancing is required.
The company is testing the revamped seats on economy flights 506 and 507 between Frankfurt, Germany (FRA) and São Paulo, Brazil (GRU). Upgrading to three or four lie-flat seats will set you back £220 (US$263).
Lufthansa takes the option a step further than Air New Zealand by cranking up the benefits to include priority boarding and a “Business Class quality” topper, blanket, and pillow too.
The move is also much of a win for Lufthansa. As Dmarge points out, passengers would often race to occupy available seats when they’re lucky enough to be on a flight with empty rows. The airline could be spinning the normally free-of-charge seats to its advantage by putting a price tag on them and making them ethically okay to occupy.
Interested flyers will simply need to purchase a Sleeper’s Row ticket at the airport during check-in or when they’re at the boarding gate from Lufthansa’s ground staff. More details about the upgrade can be found here.
