Marvel Debuts Comic Book Spotlighting Superheroes From The Real World, Nurses

Marvel Comics’ latest heroes weren’t injected with power serums or armed with advanced equipment, unless you’re counting flu vaccines and medical tools—they’re the real-life frontliners who are safeguarding everyone against COVID-19.
The comic behemoth has joined forces with the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and advertising agency Doner to create a new comic book following the real heroes, nurses, and their sacrifices as they protect against the coronavirus day in and out.
The comic book, titled The Vitals: True Nurse Stories, features true emotional accounts of healthcare professionals from the AHN’s 13 hospital establishments in Western Pennsylvania.
“At Marvel, we tell stories about heroes every day. But this story is special. It tells a story about our everyday heroes – the nurses and healthcare professionals working tirelessly and courageously to save lives,” Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Entertainment, said in a press release. “Along with AHN, we are honored to help tell these stories, which we dedicate to the real heroes who are saving the world.”
Claire Zangerle, DNP, a Chief Nurse Executive from the AHN, described, “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been in awe of the courage and resourcefulness of our nurses, who put their own health at risk to care for these vulnerable patients. We are so proud of them, and we want to make sure they know how much we appreciate their exceptional work. We hope that in seeing themselves as real Marvel Comics superheroes, they can take a moment to look back in pride on their exceptional work and compassion during an exceptionally difficult time for our communities.”
The book was shared with children of the AHN’s nurses, who expressed their awe at their valiant parents in a video for the campaign’s launch.
The comic will be distributed in the network’s hospitals and recruiting events, and is available for the public to read via Marvel.com.
