Twitter Sums Up 2020 In A Nutshell With Its Top Trends & Tweets

As the year is coming to an end, Twitter has released its biggest trends and takeaways from 2020 with the hashtag ‘#ThisHappened’.
The platform revealed the year’s most liked and retweeted tweets, most-used emojis, and favorite hashtags in a blog post on Monday.
The top hashtag of 2020 was ‘#COVID19’, followed by ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ and ‘#StayHome’—where people encouraged each other to social distance in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
The most tweeted-about personalities were Donald Trump and Joe Biden respectively. This was followed by George Floyd, who sparked Black Lives Matter protests, and Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash. Fifth in place was Barack Obama.
The most popular emoji of 2020 is the ‘Tears of Joy’ symbol, while the crying and ‘Pleading Face’ emojis fell in the second and third places.
Despite 2020 being unpredictable, many Twitter users “had a sense of gratitude and support for [the] communities.” Tweets that expressed gratitude went up by 20 percent globally, as many took to the platform to thank doctors and teachers. Phrases like ‘essential workers” and “frontline workers” have been tweeted over 17 million times.
