Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’ Trailer Is So Creepy, It Could Give You Nightmares

The live-action remake of Pinocchio, directed by Matteo Garrone, is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day this year. The film’s trailer is now out, and it has given a glimpse into the new rendition of the famous children’s tale.
The trailer starts off with a woodcarver, played by Italian film star Roberto Benigni, chipping away at a wooden puppet that soon comes to life. The puppet, played by Federico Ielapi, is introduced as the beloved Pinocchio.
The video then takes a dark turn as the wooden boy runs away in hopes of becoming a “real” boy. He falls into a series of unfortunate events, from being stuck in a monstrous fish’s belly to being jailed by fantastical creatures.
The trailer presents a lineup of CGI-heavy characters, from a human with a snail’s shell, to a couple of men with dog faces and Pinocchio himself as a wooden boy.
The character designs were described as “creepy” and “terrifying” by many social media users who came across the trailer. Some also compared the film to the notorious Cats film remake, which saw criticism for its eerie feline-human character looks.
“Okay, so we take the design principles of the Cats movie and then we make a Pinocchio movie,” one user mocked.
“This is what nightmares are made of,” one user said about the trailer. Though it seemed like the film’s trailer might deter people from watching it, some users are actually interested in the film because of how horrifying it appeared to be.
