Disney and Pixar were set to release their animation film,
Soul, in theaters back in November. However, the
coronavirus pandemic pushed the movie to be released on Disney+’s streaming platform for the Christmas season. Anyhow, Disney’s publication Chronicle Books has now unveiled an art book about the film’s creative journey, called
The Art of Soul.
The art book aims to highlight the creative process behind the animations, as well as detail the concepts behind the designs of the characters and sets for the film.
The Art of Soul is divided into three parts to bring the readers on a journey behind the film’s production.
The first part examines the designs behind the main character Joe Gardner, a band teacher in a middle school. It also exhibits the artistic intricacy in the scenes set in the school.
The second section travels into ‘The Great Beyond’, and explains how the designers created the human characters and their soul versions to exude the same appearance, in order for viewers to distinct the roles accordingly — even though the souls are just translucent bubbles.
Finally, the third part dives back into reality with drawings and sketches of the real world. Readers will be able to observe the complex elements that showcase the streets in New York City.
The Art of Soul is now available on
Amazon.
