Japanese Cemetery Launches Digital Tombstone For Communal Graves

A cemetery in Chiba, Japan has introduced a high-tech tombstone that display your loved one’s details on it.
The Yachiyo Yukyu no Sato cemetery has designed a stone tombstonb equipped with Bluetooth technology. Dubbed the Hikari tombstone, it has a small electronic screen that allows mourners to select what they choose to feature on the screen.
The tombstones will set you back for 290,000 yen (US$2,800), and it is a great way for family members and relatives to pay respect to the dead. To activate the digital screen, users would have to bring a special talisman when they visit. The tombstone is then activated via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and the data is then displayed on the screen.
The tombstone displays their loved one’s name, date of death and more. Once they have paid their respects, the screen will return to its default setting.
The tombstone is Japan’s response to its aging society and its rising cost of a plot of land. Because some relatives are not able to afford a plot, sharing a grave becomes a good option.
The digital tombstone also offers customization services, so users are able to control what information they choose to display on the screen and how they wish to present it.
