7-Eleven Japan has landed itself in controversy after customers discovered its sweet beverages have been housed in a rather deceiving packaging.
The store released a tasty drink called Tapioca Strawberry Milk, which is packaged in a see-through cup with a plastic lid on it. From its exterior, the drink looks enticing as the cup appears to show pink and red marks all over it with a layer of strawberry fruit at the bottom.
However, Twitter user @neqointegra shared a video showing that the drink isn’t filled with the enticing layer of strawberry fruit. Instead, when the cup was tilted, the drink sank to the bottom while the red mass stayed put, showing that it was a packaging trick after all. The colored marks also gave the illusion that the drink was filled with a lot more fruit that what was actually provided.
Social media users took to Twitter to comment about the drink, with one user writing, “They totally played me. I really thought it was all fruit,” while another wrote, “They’re devious geniuses.”
This was soon after the convenience store rolled out confusing packaging from a collaboration with Tokyo-based banana milk brand Sonna Banana.
Unfortunately, customers learned that the milk was packaged in a cup with the same color as the drink. Hence, it was never filled to the brim.
