Dior Turns To Tarot Cards To Design Mystical & Magnificent Spring/Summer Looks

Mystical and spiritual graphic elements are coming into alignment of late in the design realm, and even Major Arcana fashion house Dior is on board.
For its Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture showcase titled Le Château du Tarot (The Tarot Castle), Dior debuted ethereal and dignified clothing heavily inspired by zodiac signs and the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, a 15th-century edition from Milan, Italy and one of the oldest-surviving tarot decks known.
The lineup, unveiled at Paris’ Haute Couture Week, includes old world-inspired organza gowns, empire-waist structures, and tailored trousers in luxurious fabrics like black fabric and intricate hand-painted embroidery.
For the fashion collection, Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri drew upon her intrigue with tarot cards and their believed ability to offer clarity and unlock the unknown. The yearning for closure has always been a shared feeling, but it has become much more apparent during the uncertain COVID-19 pandemic.
Chiuri shared with Vogue, “What was nice for me about the Tarot is that when you are in a difficult moment, something that is magical can help us, to help us think better. It’s a long time we’ve all been staying alone. You think much more about many aspects of yourself and your life. That’s my belief: this year changed us a lot.”
The accompanying Le Château du Tarot film, directed by Matteo Garrone, features a girl who seeks help from a tarot reader to get on with her path to self-discovery. She then finds herself in a majestic castle and meets each tarot figure.
Chiuri pointed out that Christian Dior himself had sought guidance from the tarot. Anxious about his sister Catherine being missing during World War II, coupled with the knowledge that she was in the French Resistance, Mr Dior turned to tarot cards for possible answers.
“I think he was very worried; trying to find hope in some signs,” the creative director added.
