Humanoid Robot Ai-Da Is Gearing For Exhibition Displaying Her Self-Portraits

Ai-Da, a robot powered by artificial intelligence (AI), is set to display a series of self-portraits created from “looking” in a mirror.
According to her creators, the exhibit at London’s Design Museum aims to serve as a warning about being too dependent on technology in a data-driven world, per The Times.
Ai-Da is named after the 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace. She is capable of drawing real people using its camera eye and a pencil in hand.
A microchip integrated in her eyes allows her to “look” into a mirror and create artwork from sight with the help of an algorithm and her robotic hand.
The idea for Ai-Da came from gallery curator Aidan Meller and art curator Lucy Seal, together with Oxford University and the British robotics company Engineered Arts.
Seal said that the self-portraits are meant to be a critique for our current reliance on data-driven technology. In an interview with The Times, she explained that “we live in a culture of selfies, but we are giving our data to the tech giants, who use it to predict our behavior. Through technology, we outsource our own decisions.”
Ai-Da’s work will be exhibited at the Design Museum in London from May, if conditions permit. A self-created typeface will also be unveiled, and the humanoid will also make guest appearances at the exhibition.
