Her name might symbolize the middle of something, a day blurred into the humdrum of clockwork, but Wednesday Addams certainly sticks out like a sore thumb in school. Netflix zeroes in on the gothic oddball in an upcoming live-action series,
Wednesday.
The streaming platform released the first poster for the coming-of-age comedy on Wednesday, an admittedly apt day to make this announcement,
confirming speculations of Tim Burton’s involvement in what will be his television directorial debut.
The illustration depicts the schoolgirl’s silhouette with a cello. Instead of holding a bow, she grips a knife, slicing a string off the musical instrument.
The eight-part series, written by Al Gough and Miles Millar, will follow Wednesday as she harnesses her psychic ability and unearths answers about a supernatural mystery involving her parents, all while coping with awkward school life.
In a blog post, Teddy Biaselli, Netflix’s Director in Young Adult and Family Series, described how impressed the Netflix team had been with Gough and Millar’s pitch. “They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story,” he recounted.
The company was, understandably, also delighted to hear that Tim Burton, a “lifelong
Addams Family fan,” was interested in venturing into television with the forthcoming comedy. “Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like
Edward Scissorhands,
Lydia Deetz, and
Batman,” Biaselli expressed. “And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy.”
