Disney Fans Notice Similarities Of ‘Luca’ Trailer To ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Film

The first trailer for Disney Pixar’s Latest animated film Luca has been unveiled, and many viewers believe it holds a striking resemblance to another film.
Luca follows two boys from the Italian Riviera, Luca and Alberto, “an unlikely but strong friendship… between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human,” the film’s description reads.
While the film is positively adorable and shows Luca and Alberto prancing around the countryside, many viewers have drawn parallels to Elio and Oliver in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 Call Me By Your Name romance film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
After the release of the trailer, social media users began putting photos of Chalamet and Hammer and Disney’s Luca in side-by-side comparisons, and it is hard to deny some of the similarities.
However, it is important to note that there are indeed stark differences between the two movies. Luca and Alberto are sea monsters who have taken on a human form and there is no romance to be found between the two boys.
Director of Luca, Enrico Casarosa, grew up in the Italian countryside just like Guadagnino, which explains the similar scenes and vibe. He explained to Entertainment Tonight that the film is a coming-of-age story centered around the bonds of childhood friendships.
“I think so many of us have these friendships that are right smack in the middle of when we’re just leaving the confines of the family, that help define our identity. What are you? What are you not?” he said.
Luca is set to hit theaters this 18 June.
