UK Newspaper Subtly Honors International Women’s Day With Uplifting Front Page

To some, the March 8 2021 edition of UK-based i newspaper may look a little unusual.
On any other day, the paper’s front page would be decked out with photos of “popular” politicians and sportsmen. However, the publication quietly showcased the names and faces of trailblazing females on its issue for March 8, which happens to be International Women’s Day.
For instance, an exclusive with Oxford vaccine designer Prof Sarah Gilbert takes up the center of the issue, while a piece on “the scientists who led us through the pandemic” is refreshingly highlighted with the photo of a woman.
It suggests how much the general public has been conditioned to see male figures on the front of news pages and as representatives of healthcare and sports.
Literature lover Julie Owen Moylan revealed on Twitter that it took awhile before she discovered the discreet homage.
Other women commended that the feature was a “breath of fresh air” and was “powerful and apt,” and praised how the newspaper didn’t even use International Women’s Day-related hashtags to draw attention to itself.
As one social media user notably pointed out, “Now they just need to do it for the next 100 years to make up the shortfall.”
