Statues of Donald Trump in the likeness of a meditating monk are now retailing on a Chinese online marketplace, portraying a persona distant from that of the impassioned caps lock-typing former US president.
The sculptures depict Trump in meditation with his eyes closed; his hands are gathered on his lap, with his thumbs pointing out, a position representing contemplation and meditation in Buddhist art.
The statues are sold by a Xiamen, Fujian-based entrepreneur on e-commerce platform Taobao. They arrive in two sizes; there’s a smaller 6.3-inch version, priced at Chinese yuan 999 (US$154), and a larger 18-inch variant that’s priced at Chinese yuan 3,999 (US$615). To advertise the products, the seller accompanied them with the tagline, “Make your company great again!”
First reported by Chinese state-owned publication
Global Times, the listing has since been picked up by international media. The seller told
Global Times that “dozens” of the 100 sculptures manufactured had already been snapped up.
One customer described that they had purchased a statue as a reminder to not be “too Trump.”
One can’t help but wonder—what’s on this idol’s mind? Could it be a stream of tweets that can no longer see the light of day? Or might he be devising a new Diet Coke button to be used outside the White House?
