Apple Seemingly Fixes $549 AirPods Max To Last Longer With New Update, Finally

At US$549, Apple users are expecting the high-end AirPods Max to exceed their expectations. One nagging gripe, however, is that the earphones tend to run out of juice overnight. This is partly due to the fact that the AirPods Max do not have a power button. Instead, the headphones enter a low-power mode when they’re inactive for five minutes or are inserted in the accompanying Smart Case. A second and more intensive low-power mode kicks in after some time.
As a sigh of relief, this issue doesn’t appear to be permanent, as users have noticed that the AirPods Max battery isn’t draining as quickly as it used to after a new Apple firmware update. As noted by developer Guilherme Rambo in a test over half-hour intervals, when docked in the Smart Case, the AirPods Max aren’t losing as much battery life as before the update. His observations were corroborated by other users, including Apple-focused tech writer Jason Cipriani.
Furthermore, Apple has apparently triggered the ultra-low power mode to start in about 30 minutes, as opposed to 18 hours, allowing the headphones to survive longer on a single charge. And users who’ve been experiencing crashes with the headphones after updating to iOS 14.5 will no longer face this frustration.
Apple currently doesn’t allow manual updates for the AirPods Max, so to ensure that you’ve automatically installed the latest firmware, simply charge the device and check that your iPhone is connected to Bluetooth.
