What is green and is a symbol of sustainability? Yes, the recycling logo, but also Doraemon. UNIQLO has appointed the adorable cat robot as its global sustainability ambassador and turned his blue appearance green, alongside a renewal of its pledge for zero greenhouse emissions by 2050.

The Japanese everyday fashion company unveiled sustainable Doraemon at a media event on Monday. The green character took to the stage as the Doraemon chorus played. “I was so touched people called out my name,” he later responded, according to Sourcing Journal.

Describing his new role, Doraemon expressed, “Hi, everyone! I’m Doraemon and now I am green! I’ll do my best as UNIQLO Global Sustainability Ambassador to help create a much brighter future! I want to work with you all, so we can make people everywhere more interested in the future of our world!”

Doraemon is the latest to join UNIQLO’s existing lineup of global ambassadors, which includes Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori, Shingo Kunieda, Gordon Reid, Ayumu Hirano, and Adam Scott.

UNIQLO accompanied its freshly-appointed ambassador with a brand new green logo as a reassurance of its commitment to sustainability. The mark will appear alongside a ‘Doraemon Sustainability Mode’ corner across UNIQLO’s global retail stores and channels.

During a press conference in January, DesignTAXI learned that UNIQLO was taking early steps to reinforce sustainability into its production processes. These include making jeans out of recycled polyester and manufacturing down jackets with old clothing collected from customers.

Having arrived from the 22nd century to live in the present, it’s likely Doraemon has seen some unsightly things from the future, so we’d best listen to the green anime robotic cat.
