Stella McCartney Unveils Its First Garments Made From Mushroom Leather

Designer Stella McCartney has unveiled a stylish black top and pants made of mycelium leather.
The material, called Mylo mycelium leather, is made from the root system of fungi and resembles animal leather, with a fraction of the environmental cost. Stella McCartney’s version is manufactured by startup Bolt Threads.
The company feeds the material with organic biomatter, such as sawdust. After it expands and forms a foamy layer, the material is then harvested and dyed similar to how animal leathers are processed. According to the company, this material consumes fewer natural resources and emits lesser greenhouse gases as opposed to animal- and plastic-based artificial leather.
The outfit, which is a two-piece bustier top and trousers, features panels of recycled nylon attached to the vegan leather. The garments, however, aren’t available to purchase but they mark McCartney’s step into the world of sustainable fashion.
“These rare, exclusive pieces embody our shared commitment with Bolt Threads to innovate a kinder fashion industry—one that sees the birth of beautiful, luxurious materials as opposed to the death of our fellow creates and the planet,” McCartney said.
McCartney’s first work with Mylo began back in 2018, when she designed a version of her Falabella bag with the material. The bag went on display at the V&A Museum.
Several companies, including adidas, Lululemon, and French fashion houses have all signed up to use Bolt’s Mylo leather.
“The material used in these two garments not only represents a huge step forward in both aesthetics and performance of biomaterials but also marks the beginning of the rollout of product-ready Mylo,” Dan Widmaier, founder of Bolt Threads, shared.
