Twitter Is Exploring Emoji Reactions & Downvotes For Tweets

Twitter has been surveying users to get input on emoji-style reactions, similar to what users see on Facebook.
“We’re exploring additional ways for people to express themselves in conversations happening on Twitter,” a Twitter spokesperson said.
Its survey proposed different sets of reaction emojis, which include the heart, laughing face with tears, thinking face, and crying face.
The platform also suggested some variations on this set, where “awesome” sentiment can be expressed with either the shocked or fire emoji, or the “support” sentiment can be indicated with the hug emoji.
Twitter is also considering a way for users to signal a general like or dislike for a tweet with either a thumbs up or down, a “100” in either green or red to represent “agree” or “disagree,” or a green up arrow icon or red down arrow icon.
The platform understands that introducing emoji reactions can imply negative sentiments. It asked users how they would like to take advantage of a downvote or dislike—whether they would use the reaction instead of reply to the tweet, or if they would downvote offensive tweets.
Twitter also asked if users would feel discouraged if their tweets were downvoted and if that would stop them from tweeting in the future.
The company acknowledges that the introduction of these sets can impact how people engage with Twitter content, and some might consider leaving the platform if they become overly concerned about their tweets being downvoted.
