MIT has developed new clothing that could help with your posture.

The university’s CSAIL program has designed apparel that is capable of tracking your body’s movements with “tactile electronics” to predict posture and performance. The garments would be great for those who are struggling to correct their slouch.

According to MIT, this electronic clothing is as comfortable as usual basics. The wearable technology is able to read your movements via a special type of fiber that senses pressure and turns it into electrical signals.

The clothing is made from a mix of textile fibers which are found in sweatsuits, together with a small amount of custom-made pressure-sensing fibers. With the mix, the machine-knit apparel can determine how you’re sitting or moving around.

MIT researchers have created prototypes of smart socks, vests, gloves, and even a robot sleeve. The socks are able to track if the user is squatting, lunging, or walking. The smart vest, on the other hand, is able to detect if the person is resting a hand on their chest or leaning into an object.

Through these garments, a system collects data to anticipate posture without an all-over body stimulating receptor.

Because the apparel can read body movements, its researchers said it has numerous potential applications. The smart clothing could recommend exercise based on a person’s physique or aid athletes recovering from injuries.

It could also help promote good posture and ensure that wearers are always in the correct form to prevent injuries during workouts.
