Boston Red Sox’s New Uniforms Look Nothing Like The Old Ones

The Boston Red Sox uniforms are rather iconic. Everyone pictures a white jersey with red lettering when thinking of the Major League Baseball (MLB) team. This year, however, Nike is throwing out tradition for a brand new uniform.

City Connect took inspiration from the team’s hometown and culture. Over a three-year process, Nike researched the city, pitching the team with various ideas until it landed on this one.

Instead of white and red, the jersey is now gold, with “Boston” printed across the chest in light blue. According to Fast Company, the blue and gold (or yellow) came from Boston’s Boylston Street, where the Boston Marathon takes place annually.

It takes inspiration from the yellow and blue used on the finish line painted on the street. The new typeface is also based on the street paint with the left sleeve of the uniform will featuring a racing bib, another element of the marathon.

Additionally, the Boston Marathon usually lines up with Patriot’s Day, an important holiday in Boston. So the new uniform aims to pay homage to the Boston Marathon, the street, and commemorates Patriot’s Day at the same time.

This collaboration will be the first City Connect jersey to launch in the MLB. City Connect will also be making jerseys for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, and San Francisco Giants later this year.

“Some fans will love it, and some fans won’t, just like moves we make on our roster,” said Red Sox CEO Adam Grossman.

While fans remain split, we bet these new uniforms will dominate discussions once they debut on the field come April 17.
