Picasso, Sanyu Works Worth $25M Up For First-Of-A-Kind Sotheby’s Auction In Asia

Following exponential growth in the Asian art scene, Sotheby’s has announced it will be holding an auction titled ICONS: Masterpieces from Across Time and Space” in Hong Kong.
This is the first time Sotheby’s is holding such an auction, featuring both Western and Asian artists, in Asia. The sale will feature paintings by Pablo Picasso, Sanyu, Alberto Giacometti, and Zhang Daquian. Up for auction is also a Song Dynasty Bodhisattva sculpture from the 11th century.
Headlining the auction is Sanyu’s Nu avec un pékinois (1950s), featuring a single female nude. This was also the subject of Sanyu’s second-most expensive work, the Quatre Nu, that sold for US$33 million. Another standout piece is Picasso’s portrait Buste de Matador (1970), painted late into the artist’s career. These two paintings are estimated between US$12.9 million and US$19.3 million each.
Also part of the sale will be a small brass bust by Giacommetti, as well as an ink self-portrait on gold paper by modern Chinese artist Zhang Daquian. Last but not least, a large-scale antique wooden sculpture of the Tibetan deity Avalokiteshvara is estimated to sell for US$3.9 million.
The ICONS: Masterpieces from Across Time and Space auction will take place on April 18 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong gallery at One Pacific Place.
