McDonald’s Singapore has released a clip that “reunites” foreign workers who are working in Singapore with their family members abroad through digital means.
Due to the pandemic, foreign workers have been stuck in the city-state for over a year. These individuals are not able to return home to celebrate Ramadan with their loved ones in Malaysia.
Among them is a McDelivery rider by the name of Samsuri. The Malaysian Muslim worker explains in the commercial how Ramadan this year is different for him as he would be celebrating it alone in Singapore, while his family members are in Malaysia. Samsuri also shares that some of his colleagues are in the same predicament.
The advertisement also features a couple of other Malaysian workers, Rozaini and Anas, who have both been working in Singapore longer than Samsuri.
Rozaini reveals that if she could return to her home country, she would want to hug her family. “Three months here feels like I haven’t seen them in three years,” she says with a lump in her throat. She explains that she has had to push through because her responsibility to earn her keep for her family is more important.
The video then shows the individuals in a room, where they are reunited virtually with their family members. The digital transition looks like they are all seated across a single large table in the same room. The heartfelt scene pushes everyone in the video to tears.
The commercial was shared on the fast-food chain’s Instagram page, and social media users were quick to express their comments. Many users were sympathetic towards the separated families and expressed how the clip made them emotional.
