The state of California is distributing new stickers to anyone who receives a vaccination at a public site. It enlisted the help of star industrial design firm
fuseproject, who took the stickers on as a pro bono project.
A Band-Aid heart, together with the words “Immunity Together,” was designed in partnership with the California Department of Public Health and the Governor’s Office for Social Innovation.
This comes as California tries to put a more positive spin on the vaccination experience. According to
Fast Company, some vaccination sites like the one at Moscone Center have led the charge, playing music such as tracks from the Beatles and Beach Boys to keep the mood up while residents wait in line.
Psychologically speaking, the sticker may also prompt more Californians to get vaccinated.
Prior research has shown that “I Voted” stickers actually had an impact in getting people out to vote. The vaccination sticker, too, may have the same effect.
The COVID-19 sticker is a colorful, wearable point of pride for those who have gotten their vaccinations. It’s an eye-catching symbol that’s also adorable enough to make the rounds on social media. The sticker comes in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Tagalog; celebrating the diversity of the population in California.
“I think the experience we’re hoping the design will create is pride in getting vaccinated,” said Tina Hardison, brand lead at fuseproject. “I’m hoping, too, when people put it on and wear it out in the world, it will not only help people feel pride, but inspire others to get vaccinated.”
