Hyundai Envisions Its First Commercial Car As A Retrofuturistic Electric Vehicle

Take that, Cybertruck. Hyundai’s latest conceptual car is straight out of a cyberpunk world. The sleek yet familiar-looking Hyundai Pony Heritage Series experimental vehicle is actually a huge step into the past—it’s a reimagination of the very first mass-produced Hyundai car, the Pony, for the electric vehicle (EV) era.
Now on display at the Hyundai Motorstudio in Busan, South Korea, the Pony Heritage Series retains nostalgic external elements of the original Pony from 1975, such as the matte metallic finish and hatchback silhouette, and bears some contemporary upgrades, including pixel LED headlights and cameras in place of side-view mirrors.
On the inside, the Pony Heritage Series gets concealed LED door lighting, a brushed-metal dashboard with a new three-spoke steering wheel, voice-activated controls, and leather bucket seats. There’s also a vacuum tube configuration on the dashboard that illuminates numbers to indicate how fast the car is being driven.
The experimental vehicle will be on show at Hyunda’s Reflections in Motion exhibition through June 27, 2021.
