Mondrian Artwork To Make First Public Appearance In 30 Years At Auction

Paintings by world-famous artists Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, and Vincent van Gogh are up on display at Christie’s in London. While COVID-19 restrictions have been slightly lifted in the UK, the auction house is still encouraging fans to book viewings as museums remain closed to the public.
These three oil paintings on display are highlights of the upcoming 20th Century Evening Sale, scheduled to take place on May 13 in New York. Previously, it was announced that Picasso's portrait of his young lover, titled Femme assise près d'une fenêtre (Marie-Thérèse) (Woman Sitting Near a Window), will go under the hammer for an estimated US$55 million.
As per Union Leader, two new artworks will join it. Mondrian’s iconic Composition: No. II, with Yellow, Red and Blue makes its first public appearance in nearly three decades. It is estimated to sell in the region of US$25 million at the auction.
“We haven’t had a Mondrian of this quality at auction since 2015,” Keith Gill, Head of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department at Christie’s London, told Reuters.
Van Gogh’s Le pont de Trinquetaille will also go on sale, and is the epitome of the artist’s mature style, which he mastered during his fifteen months in Arles. It depicts the Trinquetaille Bridge, which connects Arles with its suburb Trinquetaille on the opposite bank of the Rhône River. It will sell for approximately US$25 million to US$35 million.
“This art may well disappear from view now for 20, 30 years,” said Gill.
