As part of a slew of
new investments, Apple has unveiled its plans to invest over US$1 billion to construct a new campus and engineering hub in North Carolina. This will be the company’s first major hub on the East Coast.
The tech giant has said the new campus will create at least 3,000 new jobs in machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), software engineering, and other cutting-edge fields.
It will also establish a US$100 million fund to support schools and community initiatives in the area, and plans to contribute over US$110 million for infrastructure to the 80 North Carolina counties with the greatest need. Plus, when the new hub officially opens, Apple expects to generate over US$1.5 billion in economic benefit for the state.
According to Gizmodo, Apple has said it will begin hiring new employees immediately, who will work out of leased office space before moving into the campus sometime in 2022. Apple CEO Tim Cook and COO Jeff Williams already have close ties to North Carolina, both having gotten their MBAs at Duke University.
“As a North Carolina native, I’m thrilled Apple is expanding and creating new long-term job opportunities in the community I grew up in,” Williams said in a statement, as per
Gizmodo.
