MUJI Phases Out Plastic Drink Bottles With New Aluminum Redesigns

MUJI, an icon for minimalism in Japan, is finally also stripping back on its environmental footprint with an upgrade of single-use packaging materials.
As SoraNews24 reports, the Japanese “no-brand” lifestyle goods store has ceased stocking beverages in PET plastic bottles across the country. In place of plastic, the drinks are now being stored in aluminum packaging.
MUJI notes in a press release that it chose to make the transition to aluminum as aluminum cans “have a high recycling rate of about 98% in Japan.” Compared to plastic, it is also easier to recycle and has a higher reuse rate.
And it’s also great for shelf life—aluminum helps protect liquids from light, which makes it a popular choice for food and beverage packaging.
For good measure, MUJI says some of its drink items that are being contained in plastic will be discontinued after they sell out.
