Peloton Issues Nationwide Recall On All Treadmills Due To Fatal Safety Risks

Following reports of various incidents occurring on Peloton’s treadmills, including the death of a six-year-old child, the company has issued a nationwide voluntary recall of both the Tread and Tread+.
In April, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) had issued a warning, saying the Tread+ posed “serious risks to children” and recommended users to “stop using the product immediately.”
The Peloton Tread, a smaller version of the treadmill, is also being recalled due to risk of injury related to its touchscreen. According to Mashable, the CPSC has received 18 reports of the touchscreen loosening, with 6 reports of it detaching from the treadmill altogether. While no injuries have been reported in the US, there have been a small number in the UK and Canada.
Initially, Peloton CEO John Foley refuted the claims saying the Tread and Tread+ were unsafe, but has since apologized for his response. The company will grant full refunds to owners of both treadmills.
If the Tread+ is returned after November 6, 2022, only a partial refund will be offered. There is currently no set date for refunds of the Tread.
The firm has also said it is working on free repairs for users. It says it will closely cooperate with the CPSC for an “approved repair available for you in the coming weeks,” though it does caution users to stop use of the treadmills immediately.
