Walk Along World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge, Now Open In Portugal

Last week, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge officially opened in the tiny town of Arouca in Northern Portugal.
Tucked between mountains and greenery is the UNESCO-recognized Arouca Geopark, where the bridge is suspended 175 meters (574 feet) above the River Paiva.
The landscape, with flowers all around, may be picturesque, but crossing the bridge isn’t for the faint-hearted. Despite being secured with steel cables and two huge towers on either side, the see-through pathway of the 1,693-foot bridge sways with each step.
Starting today, visitors can book a trip on the bridge. Locals of Arouca hope the attraction, which cost approximately US$2.8 million to build, will help attract tourists to the region.
“It is a breath of fresh air for our land because it will attract more investment, more people,” local tour guide Emanuel told Reuters.
