Starting May 22, the family behind the viral Charlie Bit My Finger YouTube clip from 2007 will be selling the rights to the home video as an NFT—really.
Upon its sale, the original 55-second-long video will be deleted from YouTube, allowing its new owner exclusive access. The original clip has amassed over 880 million views to date, making it one of the most-viewed viral videos of all time.
The clip is slated to be taken down on May 23, 2021, the day after its 13th anniversary on YouTube.
Apart from owning a piece of “internet history,” the winning bidder will also get to create their own parody of the video with its original stars Harry and Charlie, though it’s unclear how that will pan out, considering the boys are now 17 and 15-years-old respectively.
According toInput, the auction will take place on NFT marketplace Origin, and will accept Ethereum-backed cryptocurrency including Origin Dollar, DAI, USDC, and USDT.
You’ll just have to wait and see how much people are willing to shell out for exclusive rights to a viral meme.
