Tinder is rolling out new a feature that’s a first for the online dating scene, aimed at reducing harassment within the app.

‘Are You Sure’ (AYS) will use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect inappropriate language before a user sends a message, prompting them to pause and rethink it before hitting send.

The firm says in early testing, results have shown AYS to reduce inappropriate language by more than 10%.

The AI behind AYS was built based on what Tinder users have reported as inappropriate in the past, and will continue to improve over time as users report more of what they deem are uncouth messages.

When a user types a message that the AI flags, a pop-up will appear, saying “Are you sure you want to send? Think twice – your match may find this language disrespectful.”

According to Tinder, users who saw the AYS prompt were less likely to be reported for inappropriate messages over the next month, indicating that it could be changing long-term behaviour and not just a single message.

“Words are just as powerful as actions, and today we’re taking an even stronger stand that harassment has no place on Tinder,” said Tracey Breeden, Head of Safety and Social Advocacy for Match Group, which owns the app.

RAINN, the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the US, has also commended the effort.

“We’re excited to see Tinder continue to innovate on safety. By conveying their expectation for respectful communication, and letting users pause a moment to rethink a message that might offend, Tinder is engaging its community to create a safer platform,” explained President of RAINN, Scott Berkowitz.
