LEGO Unveils Its Largest Set To Date, A World Map Made With 11,695 Elements

For six months, LEGO’s replica of Rome’s Colosseum stood as its largest set yet. Grand as it may be, Rome is a speck of the world—so, on Tuesday, its title was trounced by the latest LEGO set: a DIY world map.
The intricate LEGO Art World Map encompasses 11,695 pieces, knocking out the record set by the 9,036-piece Colosseum set. Most of the elements are 2D colored dots, creating more contours in the artwork while making the kit more challenging for the builder.
The construction process begins with black base plates to support thousands of colored tiles. To ensure you won’t pull your hair out during the arduous journey, the set is split into 12 smaller sections which can be pieced together to form the big picture.
The 25.5 inch by 40.5 inch map is designed with precision in mind, and there’s an instruction manual to help you achieve that accuracy. However, it’s also open for imaginative customization; builders are encouraged to wash the depth-accurate oceans in colorful motifs, or even keep them in black and white. You are, after all, the maker of this alternate Earth.
