Looking For A Fresh Start? You Can Own A House In Japan For Just $450

Kicking yourself for missing out on Italy’s €1 homes? Now, Japan could be your answer for an inexpensive fresh start.
Situated in the picturesque countryside, you could own a bargain home in the city of Nagano for as little as 50,000 yen (US$453).
According to VICE, local governments in the area have begun offering these spacious houses for low fees, looking to fill the empty buildings as the population dwindles.
As part of efforts to attract new homeowners, local authorities have sponsored millions of yen worth of renovation grants, and have even given away some old homes for free.
As per a census from 2018’s Japan Housing and Land Survey, there are currently over 8 million akiyas (abandoned homes) across Japan, a 2.3% increase from 2013.
Japan, facing an aging population, has seen an increase of these akiyas after their owners have passed away, or when the younger generation move into the city.
To help promote the catalog of akiyas available, the city government of Nagano has created an “akiya bank” website to aid its cause. Launched over five years ago, it lists the available akiyas and financial support programs offered by the local authorities – including grants of up to 1 million yen (US$9,075) to renovate a home in the rural suburbs.
A 50,000 yen (US$453) home (featured in the pictures below) comes with seven spacious rooms, and even its own garden to boot.
Located near the rice fields, its new owner will be able to enjoy views of the paddy fields from its sunny southern-facing rooms, taking in the fresh air the countryside has to offer.
