Hermès Shows Off ‘Plant-Based’ Birkin Bags Crafted From Actual Vegetables

After years of criticism from animal rights activists, Hermès has begun working with vegan leather for its bags. With that being said, its latest concept takes going green and plant-based to the next level…
These Birkins are constructed using real vegetables by designer Ben Denzer as part of a social media project with the French luxury label. Here, Hermès handbags get a refreshing reimagination—both literally and figuratively—using asparagus, cabbage, and cucumbers.
Denzer left no part of the vegetable wasted. Stalks were bent and tied together to create handles, while flesh was cut into a padlock and bridges.
However, the designer discovered that certain materials—namely fruits—are trickier to work with. It turns out that apples and bananas are far better for eating, as they don’t provide enough structural integrity.
While the objective behind the stunt is unclear, the photos could be a teaser for Hermès’ upcoming alternative leather bags, slated to reach stores at the end of this year.
