Leica Debuts Its First Smartphone With A Large 20MP Sensor For ‘DSLR Vibes’

Leica has launched its very first smartphone, with world-class camera capabilities to boot.
The leader in the camera market has included a huge one-inch sensor on its first-ever smartphone, which comes with its own camera lens-cap so it feels just like a DSLR.
Unveiled at a press event in Tokyo, the ‘Leitz Phone 1’ is available in Leica’s signature matte black design, a contrast to the colorful, glossy models currently saturating the market.
According to Yanko Design, the smartphone boasts a Snapdragon 888 processor and, of course, its key feature—a 20MP primary camera with one-inch sensor. This incredible sensor is currently the largest for any smartphone on the market.
The Leitz Phone 1 has a rather large 6.6-inch OLED screen, with a scalable 240Hz refresh rate. And, as with most smartphones, it does have a hole-punch front-facing camera at 12.6MP.
The device consists 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage, including a superb 5,000mAh battery, so you’ll never run out of juice or space when snapping away.
As with Leica’s signature cameras, the smartphone dons its beautiful red logo at the top-right corner of its back, letting everyone know you’re sporting the famed brand.
Currently, the Leitz Phone 1 will be sold only in Japan by Softbank, and it’s unclear if Leica are planning to roll it out internationally.
Leica’s Leitz Phone 1 retails at 187,920 Yen (US$1705), which definitely places it in the premium end of the smartphone market. But with how well its cameras sell despite their price point, this smartphone could be a hit among photography enthusiasts, too.
