In a news release on Wednesday, the Neiman Marcus Group (NMG) has stated that it’s committed to eliminating sales of animal fur products by early 2023. This includes all its brands, including Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus stores.
Working closely with NMG is the Humane Society of the United States, who praised the company’s new position on animal welfare, pointing out that this move “represents a transformational change in retail.” Indeed, in the luxury sector where fur-based apparel products are most often found, NMG’s stance will surely have a domino effect on the industry and its new norms.
As detailed in their Animal Welfare Policy, NMG will continue to work with products from “synthetic, faux fur materials, and traditional animal fabrics like cashmere, leather, mohair, down, wool, and silk,” while continuing to collaborate with its brand partners and their production practices. This policy also forbids sourcing from animals who are killed solely for fur, with mink, fox, lynx, and rabbits amongst them.
The existing 22 “fur salons” across Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus department stores will be closed and converted into other spaces “customized for modern luxury experiences,” according to WWD. The change is part of the company’s Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) strategy, which covers animal welfare, ethics, and sustainability.
Geoffroy van Raemdonck, NMG’s CEO, says the company is “delivering an ultimate luxury experience” and catering to consumers’ “evolving preferences.”
As sustainability and ethics become increasingly vital in today’s landscape, this could be one of the new factors in “modern luxury” mentioned above. He also states that due to the company’s vital status in luxury retail, it “has an opportunity to build a better future for our industry.”
