If you’ve got an old MacBook that you’re planning to use as a backup, now’s the perfect time to update it. After a decade, Apple is finally allowing users to download Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion for free, dropping the original US$19.99 cost.

According to Cult of Mac, OS X Lion was first released in July 2011, with Mountain Lion being introduced the following year. Both OS were important releases, bringing new features to Mac such as AirDrop, the App Store, FaceTime, and emoji integration.

While users with more recent MacBooks won’t be able to go back to these older setups, those who still wish to use older MacBooks as their second computer or a backup will find the update invaluable. As a general rule, anything that launched with OS X Mavericks is too new to run OS X Lion or Mountain Lion.



OS X Lion works with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processors; requiring a minimum of 2GB RAM and 7GB of storage. OS Mountain Lion works on mid-2007 to 2020 iMacs, late 2008, early 2009, or newer MacBooks, mid-2007 or newer MacBook Pros, late 2008 or newer MacBook Airs, and early 2009 or newer Mac Minis.
