Earlier this week, acclaimed film director Quentin Tarantino revealed on a
podcast that he purchased the historic Vista Theatre in Los Angeles. And it’ll only show real film.
“I bought the Vista on Sunset. We’ll probably open it up around Christmas time. And again: only film. It won’t be a revival house. We’ll show new movies that come out where they give us a film print,” Tarantino said.
While the director hadn’t offered much information about what he intends to do with the Vista Theatre, he did comment on the current state of cinemas, saying chain movie theatres “have taken all the specialness out of movies,” as per
Deadline.
Tarantino lamented the movie-going experience familiar to many: never-ending commercials, lights that are too bright, and uncomfortable plastic seats. “It’s been crazy throughout my career to see how the film experience is lessened for the viewer like every five years,” he quipped.
The director said he believes “boutique cinemas” could be right for the current climate, and wants to reintroduce the real, old-school theatre experience to viewers.
Could one of the most famous directors of the past several decades be the person to bring back real film theatres? It sure seems like it.
