Google Drive Is Getting A Makeover With Faster, Highly Integrated Desktop Client

Google declared at the beginning of this year that it planned to refresh the current Drive desktop client, starting with renaming Drive File Stream to ‘Google Drive for desktop’.
Now, more changes are beginning to unfold. The old ‘Backup and Sync’ app is being unified with ‘Google Drive for desktop’, which has added an automatic Google Photos sync function to create an even more integrated user experience. This is a welcome change after Photos was estranged from Drive in a previous update, leaving desktop users no choice but to only access it through a browser. And, if users prefer, they can sync with Apple Photos too.
As a user named Anthony has discovered and reported to 9to5Google, version 49 of ‘Google Drive for desktop’ allows up to four accounts to be accessed at the same time without having to log in or out. This multi-account function, extremely helpful for those who use Google for both personal and enterprise purposes, was quietly rolled out to a select few users.
Also, users can now choose to stream or mirror local folders (such as Desktop) to Drive. These new implementations mean that instead of constantly having to download and upload files, users can now enjoy a more convenient experience. Which, when working from home became the norm for us, became all the more important.
Version 49 of ‘Google Drive for desktop’ has not yet been rolled out for most users, with the company stating that it would “share more details later this year on how Backup and Sync users can get started with Drive for desktop.”
