UEFA’s Pesky Score Bar Design Creeps Up To Viewers, Now Lives In Heads Rent-Free

Soccer was the last thing on some designers’ minds as they watched the UEFA Euros on television.
Sure, it’s nice to see everyone gather on the field again, given the tiresome pandemic. However, seasoned creatives know that—lockdown or not—the eye for detail never rests, which was why designer Matt Booth winced at the score/time bar flashed at the bottom of the screen, which was curved on one end and angled on the other.
“I’m finding it increasingly… difficult watching the football because of this,” he tweeted. “Who the hell at UEFA approved one side of the orange bar being straight and the other being curved?”
At first glance, it’s really not that terrible. But the detail creeps on you, somewhat like eating food that isn’t spicy at first but the heat just builds.
“I’ve worked on this kinda stuff,” one design studio replied. “It’s painful.”
