Hayao Miyazaki’s Keen Observation Skills Caught Animator By Surprise

Hayao Miyazaki is a known perfectionist, having come out of retirement time and again to introduce more magic into the world of animation. And it seems that part of this hardwired precision is driven by his astute observation skills, switched on even when he is not working.
A recent recount by Masaaki Endo—who was an animator for My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and more—brings the Studio Ghibli cofounder’s keen eye for detail to light. As translated by Kotaku, Endo shared in a string of tweets that he had only realized his sight was weakening after Miyazaki noticed his artwork was warped.
Endo said Miyazaki told him, “Hey, the art is distorted. Your glasses prescription is wrong, isn’t it?” While the animator was not convinced, he had his eyes checked by an optician anyway.
True enough, the doctor told him that the vision in one of Endo’s eyes was getting poorer.
Endo thus had his glasses adjusted to the new prescription. He noted that there were no issues with distorted art after getting his eyes checked.
Miyazaki’s power of observation aside, Endo learned that sight is so important, a small change to it can heavily affect art.
