Everyone In This Town Lives In The Same Building, One Of Its Kind In The World

In this Alaskan town, your coworkers, electrician, and train conductor are all your neighbors. That’s because Whittier’s residents live in the same apartment building, earning it the moniker of a “town under one roof.”
With the busy city of Anchorage being a stone’s throw away, visitors have less reason to come to icy Whittier, especially in winter, when the cold would bother even Elsa. Those who live there all year—just under 300 of them—are apparently workers of the national railway.
The train service owns most of the land in Whittier, leaving little room for residents to buy or build property. As such, most of them occupy a single, hotel-esque 14-story complex known as the Begich Towers, according to an interesting feature by This City Knows.
The building started construction during World War II, when Whittier became a strategic and logistic outpost for the US military, and saw completion in the late 1950s.
Apart from providing a roof over everyone’s heads, the building also serves as a one-stop hub for necessities. There’s a grocery store, post office and police station, on the ground floor, and a clinic on the third floor. Students would be able to get to school by walking a short pathway from the tower.
While Whittier has remained relatively undiscovered for years, the world began paying attention to following a TikTok tour by resident Jenessa Lorenz that has gone viral.
