Mulberry Enlists Alexa Chung To Design Its 50th-Anniversary Handbags

Iconic British brand Mulberry was founded by Roger Saul in Somerset, England, in 1971, making this year its 50th anniversary. A highlight among its lineup of celebrations is a collaboration with one of the brand’s muses, writer and fashion designer Alexa Chung.
However, this isn’t the first time both parties have crossed paths. Chung is actually the namesake of the brand’s famous Alexa bags, and is deemed one of the brand’s Design Icons. “Chung was frequently spotted with a well-loved vintage Mulberry briefcase by her side,” the brand explains in a press release. The design team was “inspired to create a relaxed, modern version of this traditionally formal shape, and the Alexa was born.” This collection of handbags has since risen to become one of the brand’s signature silhouettes.
Now, running alongside the signature Alexa, Mulberry has launched two new limited-edition bags designed by Chung herself. “Being invited to design my own Mulberry bag is really a dream come true,” Chung states. “The first Alexa was named after me and getting to interpret it in my own way is even better. I wanted to make sure that it would endure, become a future classic.”
They’re named the Big Guy and Little Guy, and are—you guessed it—big and small respectively. Big Guy is a larger shoulder bag, and Little Guy is a more petite design, much closer to a clutch.
They both come in four sleek hues: Big Guy in denim blue, tan suede, dark chocolate crocodile, and black patent; Little Guy in apple green, tan velvet, black velvet, and black calf leather.
The inspiration for the bags’ designs comes from vintage satchels, and the briefcase that was spotted by Chung’s side all that time ago, the Mulberry Elkington. Both new bags were designed to be able to “go with anything,” creating the perfect go-to for the multifaceted, busy lives we lead today.
