Following a recent update to Android TV, Nvidia’s Shield TV users have become increasingly annoyed by advertisements clouding their home screen.
According to Gizmodo, the latest update to Android TV on Shield TV devices, which rolled out this month, features a UI redesign that adds larger banner images to the home screen.
While these banners are touted as “recommendations” and are regularly updated to promote new streaming content, Shield TV users have left more than 800 one-star ratings on the
app’s listing, saying they consider these images to be annoying advertisements, instead.
Based on complaints in the reviews and on
Reddit, users aren’t too happy about how Android TV has ditched its minimalist design by adding banner advertisements that take up a lot more space. For a “premium streaming device” that costs about US$150 to US$200, they hadn’t expected such intrusive advertisements.
Fortunately, there are ways to minimize such advertisements from appearing on your home screen. It won’t eliminate the banners altogether, but can reduce them. As per
Gizmodo, users can go over to the Settings menu, select Device Preferences, then Home Screen, before disabling the toggles for Video and Audio Previews.
With users bombing Nvidia’s app listing on Google Play Store with terrible reviews and complaints, it’s still unclear if Google or Nvidia will do anything to correct this widely-unpopular redesign or reduce the number of advertisements that appear on the home screen.
