Last year, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clubhouse emerged as one of the biggest up-and-coming social media platforms.
Over the past year and a half, millions worldwide had signed up to be on the waitlist for the invite-only audio app. Now, Clubhouse is finally opened to the public, no invite required.
According to CNN, all iOS and Android users across the world can now sign up for the app, which allows members to join virtual rooms to have live, unscripted audio discussions.
Earlier this week, the company said its Android app had surpassed 10 million downloads, reaching yet another milestone in its incredible rise.
As the world slowly moves towards to post-pandemic normalcy, Clubhouse recognizes it’s not only competing against other social media platforms such as Facebook’s Live Audio Rooms, but also the return of real-life gatherings. This could be one of the reasons the company has now opened the app to the general public.
While the app has steadily introduced more safety features, there are also growing concerns if it’s equipped to police a greater influx of harmful speech and abuse that will undoubtedly come with the wider launch.
“We know there will be many more ups and downs as we scale, and competition from the large networks will be fierce. But we believe the future is created by optimists – and we’re excited to keep working to build a different kind of social network,” said founders Paul Davison and Rohan Seth.
