McDonald’s Australia’s got into a kerfuffle with Sony over themed PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers, and
IGN has now found that the fast-food company was never meant to actually have its own DualSense controller.
The now-mythical limited edition PS5 controllers were each
customized with fun illustrations of burgers and fries, following a white, red, and yellow color scheme.
50 of them were meant to be given away as part of a Twitch stream week in celebrations of McDonald Australia’s 50th anniversary. That is, until Sony stepped in, dashing gamers’ dreams.
McDonald’s Australia has now come out with a statement, explaining that the design was an internal concept and remained permanently in the planning phase, not something that McDonald’s intended to pitch to the gaming company.
As reported via Press Start, the statement writes: “Sony PlayStation has not authorized the use of its controller in promotional materials related to the proposed Stream Week event and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. McDonald’s stream week has been postponed and Sony PlayStation controllers will not be included in the giveaway.”
Sony has been notorious for restricting third-party accessories for the PlayStation 5, so it comes as no surprise that it has cracked down on the unofficial custom controllers here.
