US Senate Officially Declares New ‘Hip Hop Celebration Day’ & Months

After a unanimous vote, the US Senate hast just passed the Senate Resolution 331, in which August 11 will be officially recognized as “Hip Hop Celebration Day.” The entire month of August will be “Hip Hop Recognition Month,” with November taking fans of the genre down memory lane with “Hip Hop History Month.”
The Senate wanted a date to commemorate one of the most popular music genres in the country, as well as to recognize and highlight “the contributions of hip-hop to art and culture” across the states. According to Revolt, senators are also encouraged to plan activities aimed at building partnerships with the local hip-hop community and members of the creative arts scene.
Interestingly, the bill includes a detailed account of when the genre emerged: “On Aug 11, 1973, at a Back To School Jam organized by his sister Cindy Campbell and held at the recreation room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York, Clive DJ Kool Herc Campbell introduced his innovative style of disk jockeying and, together with the master of ceremonies engaging the crowd with rap on the microphone while partygoers known as B-boys and B-girls danced, introduced a new style, later known as Hip Hop.”
Since then, hip-hop has grown from a genre of music to an entire lifestyle, with aspects of it seeping into everyday life such as slang, fashion, and pop culture icons. For more information, check out the bill here.
